Movie Info (from Rotten Tomatoes)

At the age of 84, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. But without a definitive Ginsburg biography, the unique personal journey of this diminutive, quiet warrior’s rise to the nation’s highest court has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans — until now. RBG is a revelatory documentary exploring Ginsburg’s exceptional life and career from Betsy West and Julie Cohen, and co-produced by Storyville Films and CNN Films.

Reflections

I’m sure there’s more to the story; there always is. But I got the sense that the producers of RBG didn’t want to just film a biographical sketch. Rather, they wanted to inspire change-makers of all types by honoring the brilliant strategy, the long-suffering tenacity, and the powerful wisdom of the “Notorious RBG.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s significant contribution to the US’s shift in policy and legislation around gender equality cannot be overstated. She was the catalyst for methodically dismantling the long held opinions of so many in power, and establishing the legal framework for the advancements of “equal protection under the law” for all people. She is a hero and icon, two well-deserved accolades.

One of the most significant aspects of the film was the critical necessity and collective efforts of those around RBG all working together for the common cause. Without diminishing her distinguished accomplishments and individual resoluteness, it is clear that each person intersecting with RBG had a significant part to play in revolutionizing the world. Whether that is a President who desires to see change, a person litigating for equal pay, or a husband who is a revolutionary counterpart, RBG’s life and trajectory, much like ours, is held in the hands of many people along the way. We should honor and celebrate them as well.

RBG is brilliant, moving, and inspiring. It highlights Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s brilliantly crafted written opinions, her rhetorical acumen speaking challenging and necessary truths, and her commitment to justice as an interpretation of the rule of law. I hope more young women see this film, and become inspired to continue the work.
